Braemar Castle Interactive Model

About the Project

This commission was made for the Braemar Castle charity in Autumn 2022. It formed part of their national lottery funding for refurbishment of Braemar Castle. This castle is situated in Aberdeenshire in the middle of the Scottish Highlands.

Project Scope

The charity wanted a model of their castle that was able to be packed into a box and transported in a car to outreach locations such as exhibitions, local schools and community centres in order to bring to life the history and architecture of the Castle people from its history and its surroundings.

Interactive Map

I designed a box solution using Blender 3D. The box folds out to reveal a map made using transfers on the interior walls that form the map. The top lid also has a map of Scotland showing the castle in a larger geographical context.

Materials

The box was made with plywood and paint. The turret walls were made using PVC drainpipes and the top turrets that can be replaced with two different historical styles were made with 3D printing.

The West Wall

The West wall of the castle can also be removed to reveal a representation of the interior floors.

VICTORIA, ALBERT & OTHER CHARACTERS

Victoria & Albert

The brief also required characters from the history of the castle including Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. For these I referred to rudimentary photos of the characters and also the sculpt mode in Blender. These were then 3D printed out and I then used these to cast the final results in resin mixed with recycled coffee.

You can find out more about the actual castle with visiting information on their website.
